The rotary roasting kiln is amongst the largest and most problematic types of rotating kilns made as it is subjected to extreme temperatures, thermal growth, varying loads, and other operating conditions which affect the proper operation of the mill drive system consisting of a large pinion and girth gear.
In Dec 2020, whilst still complying with all COVID-19 restrictions, PT MNE sent two of their personnel to large nickel process plant in Indonesia and successfully completed measurements and inspections of the girth gear and pinion using the latest 3D laser scanning technology and other precision tooling so suitable replacements could be drawn up with CAD and then fabricated ensuring an exact match and fit.
The information gained from the inspection on the current running conditions and issues found will also be used for design improvement to prolong the life and performance of the gear sets and achieve the lowest total costs of ownership or TCO so as to allow the operation to retain and improve its competitive advantage.
